You sure have been sleeping well! Today at noon you and I smiled and laughed together before your diaper change and "ma-ma". The President of the seminary's wife, Anne, is visiting...

From Journal entry March 3rd, 2005
Ended up, Helen Groat, the women's ministry coordinator came over. But I suppose Anne will visit at some point. There have been so many visitors I get quite tired. I am also nervous about people getting you sick...Back to your birth:

[Prior to the midwives arriving, Mikko and I sat singing hymns pausing at every contraction. At one point, Dr. Melick (professor) arrived to pray for us. It meant so much! Also women's ministry leader, Helen Groat brought a sandwhich that I could barely eat before but swallowed the rest after!]
Once the midwives and Leanne[Leanne bought the midwives junk food because they though my snacks were too healthy] arrived the tub was set and filled with hot water. My contractions were getting quite intense in the lower back area. (These contractions started around 6 in the evening Monday! Mikko tried pushing or putting pressure points, but it didn't seem to help. Sometimes the midwives would find the right pressure points, but as the contractions intensified I thought I'd go insane!

Anyway, once in the tub[A Rubbermaid Horse trough placed in our bedroom] I was found to be dialated at six. I was asked to do different excersises and positions to change your position. Once you were in propper place you'd turn back into my hips! I was also encouraged to eat, but at this point I totally lost my appetite and refused to eat solid food. I relied mostly on sport tea, juices, water, and protein shakes.

At one point in the tub Claudette checked your heartbeat and noticed the speed...whether slow or fast, I do not remember she concluded that I was going to have a large baby. Ofcourse she didnt' tell me while I lay there in the water with Leanne patting my face with a cool wash clothe (Leanne, by the way, is a seminary student who is interested in becoming a doula) and Mikko, your father, not sure how to comfort this overwhelming sensation. "Your doing a great job." "You're doing well." [Mikko at one point said the midwives were having a party in the living room, acting silly while I sat in pain...thanks]

Once the hot water was regained in the house (we sure used alot of it!) Claudette suggested the shower...This is where I discovered pushing! [I only knew to push because Claudette told me to try. Same with our other two children...Someone had to coach me!] Prior to this I had thrown-up everything I ate. [This was after my midwife gave me a bunch of questionable homeopathic drugs...it worked anyway!] Your father was worried and asked if I was in harms way. The midwives responded with "This is a good thing!" The pain was also so exscrutiating that I thought I was dilarious, wanted to quit and go to the hospital. But I could never find myself to tell my support team this..."Keep going Heidi!"

Before the shower I was dialated to nine [After you were born I was told I was dialated to 12 on your way out! My midwife said people will tell you there is no such thing, but I surely believe her!]. "So close!" I thought, but for some reason (which I'll explain later) it took forever [3 hours of pushing]. Just as King David had written in the Psalms, many times I cried out, "Spirit of God!" I panicked a couple of times during the contractions and thought this was a silly thing we learned in our Bradley class but ofcourse desparate for comfort I moaned out.[Thank God, the neighbors moved out next door a week before, AND so did the neighbors up on a hill!]

While in the shower I squated and faced the bar or wash clothe holder, held on and alowed the hot water to soothe my back. Your father stood near me in his board shorts asking what he could do. At the same time Claudette asked me where the dryers were (There was alot of wet towels). I realized at this point I focus just like I did when I prepared for a race. I didn't want to respond to anyone pep talking me, nor did I want to respond to anyone, I think I ignored them (no offense). [She also cleaned up all my extra toxins if you know what I'm sayin'!]

Let me tell you. Amazing. We tried every stinkin' position to get you out! Finally, with my arms over your father's sittin' legs you came healthy into this world! I had no feeling in my legs but never the less relieved! I remember all the ladies and Mikko cheering me on as if I was on the last 100 meters of my race. You entered this world to Crystal Lewis singing "To God be the Glory..."

They cleaned you up, measured the biggest head my midwife ever delivered and Mikko took off with you! In a very un-Finnish like manner he ran outside and raised you up in the air yelling, "It's a boy! Praise the Lord!" The midwives exhausted cleaned the best they could. Leanne helped clean and hold you. The next day I sat outside our triplex and the Korean neighbors two doors down thought I was nuts sittin' on the steps out of my bed (I got cabbin fever alright!). I was grateful for Lisa and Audrey who helped me out (also CBU alums) and clean all my laundary and blood from the carpet and bathroom.

Barnabas I love you. I don't deserve such a sweetie. You are truly an encouragement to our family. May God use you grately for His kingdom.
To God be the Glory...

And God gave him an incredible mother that endured such an intense birth. May your whole family be blessed. When were the other two born? Were they born in the states or Finnland? BTW I have a new post on my blogg. It is about our new school in the process of being built (seven+ years in the waiting).

Wow, great story. I didn't realize you had a home birth with B. Can you believe he is already four? Marius turns four on Mar. 10. I can't believe how fast the time flies!

Happy Birthday, Barnabus!
